Household Budget Template
One budget for the whole household: who earns what, who paid for what, and who owes whom at the end of the month.
What's inside
One workbook, in Excel + Google Sheets. A family budget for two or more people who share costs, and want to know who paid for what without keeping score by hand:
- Start here: four steps and what the colors mean.
- Dashboard: household income, spending and what is left for the month you pick, plus the one line that settles up, for example "Sam owes Alex 128.79", with charts by person and by category.
- Household: up to 4 people with their take-home pay, and how to split shared costs: by income, equally, or by your own percentages.
- Categories: a monthly budget for each category, split into shared and personal, with groups for kids and pets.
- Transactions: one row per purchase or bill, with who paid and who it was for. Room for 2,000 rows.
- Month: budget against actual for the whole household, with "Over" flags.
- Who owes who: each person's payments, their fair share of shared costs, and the balance, month by month and for the year.
- Sample check: a sample family with the answers worked out separately. Every row shows ✓ when the formulas are right.
The sample, so you know what to expect
Alex and Sam bring home $5,200 and $3,400, so shared costs split 60.47% and 39.53%. They have a daughter in daycare and a dog. In March the household spends $6,348.06 of a $7,065 budget, the vet bill is $229.50 over, and to even out the month Sam owes Alex $128.79.
Who it's for
A good fit if you
- Run a home budget with a partner or roommates and pay bills from different accounts.
- Want a monthly family budget template with kids and pets already in the categories.
- Split costs by income and want the math done fairly every month.
Not for you if you
- Budget alone. The Google Sheets Budget Template is simpler.
- Want the file to read your bank. You type or paste the transactions.
How it works
- Open the file. It comes filled with three months of a sample family's spending.
- Check the sample. Open Sample check and see every row show ✓.
- Set up your household. Add the people, pick how to split, set budgets, then log each purchase with who paid.
Questions
Does it work in Excel and Google Sheets?
Yes. You get an Excel file (.xlsx) and a Google Sheets version. In Google Sheets you can share one copy and both log purchases from your phones.
How is "who owes who" worked out?
For each person: what they paid, minus their own personal costs, minus their share of the shared costs. A positive balance means they paid more than their share; the others owe them.
Do we have to split by income?
No. Pick by income, equal, or type your own percentages on the Household sheet.
How many people can it hold?
Up to four. With three or four people, the settle-up line shows the largest transfer and each person's balance shows the rest.
What if we have separate personal spending?
Mark the row "For" that person. It counts in the household totals but not in the shared split.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If the template does not work for you, email [email protected] within 30 days of buying and you get your money back. See the refund policy.
